Simplified naturalisation (egyszerűsített honosítás): who can apply?

Grounds and mandatory conditions for applying for simplified Hungarian citizenship.

According to the Directorate for Citizenship and Civil Registration (Állampolgársági és anyakönyvi főosztály), an application for simplified Hungarian citizenship may be submitted if at least one ground applies and all mandatory conditions are met.

1. Grounds (one is sufficient)

A) Ancestry / restoration

  • you were previously a Hungarian citizen (visszahonosítás), or
  • an ancestor of yours was a Hungarian citizen (including territories that formed part of Hungary before the Treaty of Trianon), or you can credibly demonstrate Hungarian origin.

B) Marriage to a Hungarian citizen

  • you have been in a valid marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least 10 years, or
  • you have been married for at least 5 years and have a child together.

2. Mandatory conditions (all required)

  • you demonstrate knowledge of the Hungarian language (assessed by the authority receiving the application);
  • you have no criminal convictions under Hungarian law and no criminal proceedings are pending against you;
  • granting you citizenship does not pose a risk to public order or national security in Hungary.

3. Dual citizenship

You are not required to renounce your current citizenship. However, in some countries acquiring the citizenship of another state may result in the loss of the original citizenship — it is advisable to check this with the competent authority in your country or at the relevant consulate or diplomatic mission.

Dual citizenship is permitted in Armenia, Moldova, and Russia. In Ukraine, amendments regarding multiple citizenship have been in force since 16 January 2026: Hungary is not currently on the Cabinet of Ministers list, but the list of recognised countries is expected to be expanded.
